Report on Impacted Computer Science Courses - Dale
This topic was discussed at the July 20 AC4 meeting. Peter Dale met with the Ad Hoc Committee on Instruction in Computing Science which is comprised of deans, associate deans and department chairs. Carol Wall and Dick Meisinger were added to the group.
This group was formed to deal with the campus need to deliver additional computer science courses. Dr. Grey asked relevant administrators to discuss this topic across colleges. The outcome of the meeting the group held this morning is that current educational policy will continue and Computer Science will continue to be responsible for delivering all lower and upper division computer science courses. Issues include whether or not there will be enough access, i.e. will Computer Science be able to provide the needed number of seats, whether non-majors have access to the 'right' kinds of courses, and are students of all majors graduating with sufficient "computer-savvy". Approximately $700,000 has been allocated for the current year in order to deliver the additional courses. Another issue in the delivery of computer science instruction is the capacity of the Computer Science Instructional Facility (CSIF) to support additional course. CSIF currently costs more than $300,000/year to run. Currently, there is not enough permanent funding to fully fund the facility. With an increased number of courses to support, more funding needs to be made available to this facility. This might be something this group wants to follow up and discuss with Dean Laub. A related issue for all colleges and schools is the integration of discipline-specific software applications into every discipline's curriculum.
As a point of clarification, L&S transferred resources to Engineering in 1982-83 so that Engineering would teach computer science courses that had been part of Math and Physical Sciences responsibility to deliver up until that point.
Action: Council members agreed to stay informed on this topic and assure the kind of representation in future discussions that will ensure issues continue to be addressed.
